Every February, veterinarians and pet parents across the country observe
National Pet Dental Health Month! While this my not necessarily be quite as fun as
Love Your Pet Day, dental health is an extremely important part of pet ownership as it plays a key role in your pet's overall health. We know it can be overwhelming and you may be wondering to start, so here are a few ways you can make sure you're following the best dental health practices for your pet all year long.
Practice Brushing
Regularly brushing your pet's teeth is the most effective way to keep their teeth healthy and prevent the variety of diseases that can follow poor oral health. It's not always easy, but starting young will normalize the process of brushing. Make sure you approach the task in a positive way so your dog does not become fearful or stressed.
Feed the Right Food and Snacks
A raw diet promotes oral health and can keep your dog’s mouth clean. Raw dog foods contain naturally occurring enzymes that help protect teeth and gums. And it’s just as import that they do NOT contain unnatural or damaging starches and sugars, which promotes unhealthy bacterial growth in their mouth.

Bully sticks and
duck heads promote healthy chewing, and are a great source of protein and energy for dogs.

chicken necks provide energy and protein–both are great options for both cats and dogs!
Check with Your Vet
Your pet’s teeth should be checked at least once a year by your veterinarian for early signs of a problem and to keep your pet’s mouth healthy. Have them checked even sooner if your pet experiences bad breath, broken or loose teeth, discolored teeth or tartar build-up, or bleeding or swelling of the mouth.
