Cat Health Tips for National Pet Wellness Month

10.19.2020

October is National Pet Wellness Month, an initiative by the AVMA dedicated to the health and happiness of our cuddly canines and our purr-fect pals. The goal of Pet Wellness Month is to educate pet parents on the importance of proper care for their pets and to encourage regular wellness examinations. In honor of National Pet Wellness Month, and with the wellbeing of our best furiends in mind, here are 6 tips to ensure the very best quality of life for your cat.

Tip 1: Schedule regular vet visits

To keep your cat healthy, it is important to schedule regular wellness examinations with your veterinarian. Your pet should have at least one veterinary visit per year for preventative care, according to the AVMA. Your vet will be able to determine if your pet is at a healthy weight and answer any questions you may have. Cats are skilled at hiding their discomfort so a regular wellness exam will ensure any medical issues are caught early. Your cat’s vaccinations may also be updated at this appointment, and you’ll have the opportunity to address any changes or concerns with your veterinarian.

Tip 2: Keep your cat at a healthy weight

Obesity is a serious health issue in cats. It is estimated that 60% of cats in the United States are overweight or obese. Being overweight can affect your cat’s energy level, their ability to groom themselves, and their overall behaviors. Make sure your cat gets enough exercise and feed them an all-natural protein-rich diet which helps reduce the risk for obesity in cats by eliminating excess carbohydrates.

Tip 3: Feed your cat a high quality diet

The overall health and wellness of your cat begins with the diet they eat. Many diseases can be prevented with a high quality diet. A raw diet, such as Vital Essentials freeze-dried and frozen cat food and treats, provides the ingredients your cat needs to thrive. Vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are naturally occurring in this diet, which is nutritionally formulated to meet the dietary needs of cats of all ages and life stages.

Tip 4: Keep up on grooming your cat

Grooming your cat is good for their skin and coat and helps reduce shedding around the house. It also gives you an opportunity to examine your cat so you can spot potential health problems like lumps or bumps. You should be brushing your pet at least once per week. Tip 5: Cats need dental care

Having healthy teeth and gums plays a key role in the overall health of your cat, because poor dental hygiene can lead to many other health issues. Brushing your cat’s teeth will ensure less trips to the vet by slowing or halting periodontal disease and reducing the necessity for deep dental cleanings by your veterinarian.

Tip 6: Spend quality time with your cat

Not only is your cat’s physical health important, but their mental health is important too. The AVMA reports social interaction, play and exercise are needed daily for a healthy and happy cat. Spend lots of quality time cuddling and bonding with your cat, and find ways to keep them mentally stimulated. Playing a game with your cat, giving them a new treat or toy, and finding safe ways to help your cat explore the outside world, are all excellent ways to help your cat feel like a well adjusted furry family member. Use these tips to ensure the health and wellbeing of your cat throughout National Pet Wellness Month and long after it’s over.
